Number Twelve
Remember that one time Michael Jordan wore a jersey number other than 23 or 45? It was February 14, 1990, Valentine’s Day, when Chicago was on a road trip playing Orlando. Before the game someone snuck into the Bulls’ locker room and swiped MJ’s jersey. Once the authorities were notified they sealed up the building and in true Jack Bauer fashion searched everyone leaving the building.
They never found the jersey and Jordan was forced to wear a simple number 12 with no name on the back. It’s been said that Sam Vincent was happy to give up his jersey to Michael but I’m going to say that’s false. My online sleuthing leads me to believe that Sam Vincent only wore number 11 while playing for Chicago.
With the new number Jordan poured on 49 points but the Bulls ultimately lost in overtime 135-129. So how did the ultimate competitor feel about the incident? Well, after the game Michael vowed to not sign any autographs in Orlando. And of course he stayed true to his word.
